Wheat Straw Thatched Roof – Mappowder, Dorset
The owners of this superb traditional Dorset cottage are committed to carrying out repairs and maintenance in the right way. The use of breathable materials, such as lime mortar pointing, along with a minimal intervention approach, should preserve the historic elements of this listed property in the best possible way.
Inside the roofspace, the original pole rafter roof structure is visible, along with historic base layers of straw thatch. We carried out some minor timberwork repairs, where absolutely neccessary, making sure to retain as much of the original timber as possible.
After some sensitive repairs to the original thatch base layers, the uppermost layer of combed wheat was replaced, using N59 wheat from Devon and hazel spars from Dorset.
The lead chimney back gutter and flashings were also renewed.
