Ridge and Water Reed Thatched Roof – Wimborne, Dorset
In the first half of 2019 we were asked to survey this thatched roof in Wimborne. The main roof had been thatched in water reed to a high standard around 20 years ago by another thatcher. Although worn, with some attention we were able to return the reed thatch back to a neat, uniform finish. Along with the addition of a layer of wire mesh, it will last around another 10 years. At the same time we replaced the ridge using Devon wheat straw and Dorset coppiced spars.
We completely replaced the water reed thatched roof on the lean-to extension. Using specialist silicon coated reed, which is able to shed water more efficiently, the roof should have an increased lifespan as a result.
